Some ideas about helping get more staff based on conversations at Bike!Bike! 2010.

Distinguish volunteering from work-trade?

  • A member works for the organization as a volunteer and a customer donates time to the organization as work-trade
    • Change/Add benefits for membership?
    • Customers who do work-trade do not get the same benefits as members who volunteer

What makes a volunteer at Free Ride

  • Volunteering does the same work as work-trade and also helps with more higher-level aspects
  • Require members to staff 1 time per month, and remove the existing volunteering requirement?
    • Can participation at committee meetings act as a substitute for staffing? Should that also be once per month required?
    • Need a good orientation and training program to handle the large number of new staffers
    • Need to smooth-out the logistics of staffing so that less people make mistakes
      • How do we deal with keys and access to the shop? (web interface to open the door remotely)

Questions for the council

  • Who makes a good staff volunteer and why?
    • What will their role be? How will they help out?
    • What benefits will they get and why will they want to staff?
  • Can we come up with a clear job description?
    • Include the FR mission and also outline expectations for staffing
